Mike's Pour Over
The Perfect Pour Over
An elegant way to brew. If you're looking for the perfect cup of coffee, this is it. The key to success is to pour slow and relax, enjoy a few beautiful minutes of calm. The entire brew process for a 10oz mug takes about three minutes.
What you'll need:
- 20g fresh whole bean coffee
- 11oz of fresh water, filtered is great, you'll be just fine if it's not. (you'll want a little extra water in order to rinse your paper filter)
- Hario V60 Dripper
- Hario V60 Filter
- Burr Grinder
- Pouring Kettle
- Mug or Carafe
- Brew Time: 2:30-3 minutes
Fold and rinse the filter
Place the paper filter in your Hario dripper, put it on top of your mug and rinse it with your almost boiling water. This will eliminate the paper flavor, and as a bonus will heat up your mug or carafe. Don't forget to pour the rinse water out before you brew.
Grind your beans
Grind 20 grams (about 2 rounded tablespoons) of whole beans to resemble the consistency of kosher salt, a burr grinder works best. Add to your dripper and give it a little shake to level the grounds. (20g of beans will yield a tasty 10oz mug of coffee)
Saturate the grounds
Allow your water to reach a boil, remove from heat and wait 45-60 seconds for it to cool slightly. Then pour just enough water to cover the grounds, let it sit for 15-20 seconds as it de-gasses. This will allow for proper extraction and set you up for success.
Brew your coffee
Pour a slow, even stream of hot water over the grounds in a circular motion. Aim for the center of the cone and avoid pouring water directly onto the filter. If you're using a scale, you should pour until you reach 360g. If you're like me, stop when your 10oz mug is full.
The brew process should take about 2:30-3 minutes. Remove your dripper and enjoy your beautiful cup of coffee.
